Diagnostics are vital in veterinary neurology. While pets can communicate in many non-verbal ways, they can’t describe headaches, numbness, or other symptoms of a neurological disorder. Combining advanced testing with clinical experience and expertise, we can overcome this communication barrier, pinpoint the source of a pet’s problem, and design a precise, individualized treatment plan. We can also rule out certain diseases—giving you peace of mind and avoiding unnecessary treatment.

The Diagnostic Services We Provide at Independence Veterinary Neurology

To find the cause of these often-complex conditions, we offer a comprehensive array of advanced diagnostics to ensure a timely, accurate diagnosis:

  • Neuroimaging: Our onsite diagnostic imaging modalities include:
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Superior for evaluating soft tissue of the nervous system including the brain and spinal cord. Notably, we have the most cost-effective and energy-efficient MRI scanner available in veterinary medicine
  • Computed tomography (CT)*: Best for visualizing bony structures and evaluating such issues as skull and vertebral fractures, spinal malformations, and inner ear diseases
  • Spinal taps: Also called a lumbar puncture, this procedure uses a needle inserted into the spine to collect a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which is analyzed to detect inflammation, infection, or cancer in the central nervous system

  • Electrodiagnostics*: These tests measure electrical activity in the body to help determine where a pet’s movement issues originate:
  • Nerve conduction studies (NCS) measure how fast and strong electrical signals travel along your pet’s nerves
  • Electromyography (EMG) measures electrical activity in the muscles to investigate such symptoms as weakness, cramping or unexplained pain
  • Nerve and muscle biopsies: A simple surgical procedure for evaluating muscles and nerves microscopically to help diagnose neuromuscular disorders
  • BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) hearing test: Evaluates the nerves involved in hearing and helps in diagnosing inherited deafness

Before any of these tests are ordered, however, our veterinary neurologist first performs a thorough neurological examination to evaluate your pet’s nervous system and zero in on the location of an injury or disease. This hands-on exam looks at such things as your pet’s alertness, posture and gait, reflexes, pain response, and any signs of swelling or muscle wasting.
